First Communion Basic Information

Preparing your child for their First Reconciliation (i.e. Confession) and First Holy Communion is an exciting process and a memorable time of life for your little one.  We want to give you the tools you need to help your child prepare their hearts and minds for these amazing encounters with God!

Requirements for the First Reconciliation and First Communion:

• The child must be validly baptized and 7 years of age by January 1 of the calendar year in which you wish your child to receive First Holy Communion (Saint John's must obtain proof from the Church of Baptism).
• The family should be members of the Church of Saint John the Evangelist of Little Canada by the fall of the year of sacramental preparation.  Not a member of Saint John's?  Contact the Parish Office to register.

• The family must attend Catholic Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days.
• The parents must demonstrate their commitment to involvement with the preparation process by: attending the required meetings and rehearsals, completing all preparation requirements, and providing on-going instruction and support as designated by the Pastor.

To Receive First Holy Communion, each family must:

• Participate in our faith formation program or be enrolled in Saint John's School. 
• Parents are welcome to register for "Foundations" class for Adults
• If enrolled at Saint John's School, preparation for the Sacraments will take place mostly at school
• If not enrolled at Saint John's School, parents will work with our Pastor to create a plan to prepare the child for the Sacraments at home.
• Timeline:
  • Prepare for First Reconcilation (Nov to Jan)
    • Receive First Reconciliation (Feb, on your own as a family)
  • Prepare for and receive First Holy Communion (Feb to May)
    • Attend the First Holy Communion Rehearsal
    • Receive First Holy Communion

• Jan-Feb - Attend First Reconciliation with your family at Saint John's on a day of your choosing.  Choose one of the following two options:
  • Choose one Saturday at 3:30 pm
